Domani Payload Bay with LiDAR

What is a Payload Bay?

Like Carbonix, the term payload has maritime roots. It refers to the cargo carried by ships that also pays for the ship’s passage.

Payload is the useful weight that can be carried by a vehicle. In the case of an airliner, the payload is the passengers and their baggage.

For #drones, the payload is usually cameras, specialized sensors or packages for delivery.

The overall weight of an aircraft is made up of its airframe structure, avionics, propulsion, energy storage, and payload.

If we can make the aircraft and systems lighter and more efficient, we can carry more payload for a given quantity of stored energy (be that energy in the form of batteries or fuel).

Our approach at Carbonix is to offer the most efficient and reliable platform combined with the most effective payloads available on the market.

To that end we have come up with the concept of a modular payload bay — a dedicated area within the aircraft that is specifically reserved for accommodating the payload.

This means we can swap out different payloads without affecting the structure, balance or certification of the system.\

Why does Payload matter?

The purpose of a commercial aircraft is to carry its payload safely.

Our air frames are designed to accommodate any payload within defined weight limits, ensuring they are housed properly and connected to proven power, position, command and control feeds.

The flexibility of a greater payload weight is essential to gaining an edge in terms of the quality of data capture.

Factors as varied as consistent feeds, steadiness of the platform, redundancies, and installation documentation all have a bearing on the ability to reliably capture quality data.

Payload weight also matters because it allows the upgrading and combining of emerging technologies. For example, carrying a camera as well as a dual thermal and RGB imaging system, adding LiDAR or increasing the number of sensors to operate simultaneously.

Added payload carrying capacity enables additional safety equipment such as ADSB to be integrated without penalizing range.

Carbonix developed Domani3F to have the longest range and heaviest payload capability possible in a compact transportable package.
